Wildfires cancel more flights at Kelowna’s YLW Airport
The Similkameen Spotlight

Flights at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) faced a fresh wave of disruptions on Tuesday as escalating wildfires continued to threaten the Okanagan region [1.1].

According to the airport's official schedule, a total of 18 flights slated between 9:35 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. were either canceled or significantly delayed.

Ryan Watters, a media communications representative for YLW, confirmed that the facility is experiencing operational interruptions directly tied to the regional wildfire crisis.

Watters noted that the trajectory of future cancellations remains uncertain, explaining that airport officials are in ongoing communication with the BC Wildfire Service to monitor active blazes.

Decisions regarding individual flight cancellations ultimately rest with each airline operating out of the facility, according to airport management.

The flight disruptions coincide with severe environmental conditions in the area, which has been blanketed by an orange air quality warning due to heavy wildfire smoke.

Despite the morning and early afternoon groundings, airport tracking data indicated that scheduled departures slated for late afternoon, specifically after 4:30 p.m., remained on time.

This is so stressful for everyone trying to get out of the area right now. I really hope the winds shift soon so those flights can get back on track.

Honestly, at this point I'd just drive if I had the choice. Flying out during fire season always feels like playing airport roulette.

Does anyone know if the highway south is still clear? Thinking I might need to go rescue my cousin before things get any worse.

At least the late afternoon flights are still looking okay. Fingers crossed for anyone booked on those evening departures.
