A new independent research platform, AncientMaps-Geography.com, has been launched to offer a systematic, data-driven reinterpretation of the geographic coordinate data recorded by the ancient Greek scholar Claudius Ptolemy [1.1]. Compiled around 150 AD, Ptolemy's Geographike Hyphegesis remains one of antiquity's most influential geographical works.
Authored by independent Dresden-based researcher Sven Mildner, the platform focuses specifically on Germania Magna, the historical Roman designation for territories north of the Danube and east of the Rhine. Although Ptolemy described the region in considerable detail, scholars have long puzzled over significant and spatially structured discrepancies between his coordinates and modern geography.
While past scholarship typically attributed these discrepancies to random measurement errors or medieval transcription mistakes, the new platform introduces a kinematic block-deformation model. Using geographic information system-based affine transformations and residual analysis, the model treats coordinate offsets as structured signals rather than noise.
To guard against unconstrained digital distortion that can produce arbitrary cartographic fits, the framework operates under seven simultaneously active, independent constraints. Because the system is formally overdetermined with fewer degrees of freedom than constraints, its parameters cannot be freely tuned, a robustness confirmed through out-of-sample blind testing and spatial autocorrelation analysis.
Beyond the cartometric core, the research platform explores early-modern maps as palaeogeographic archives. Analyses suggest that certain features on sixteenth-century maps, such as Gerardus Mercator's depiction of the ancient Vistula's western course, may preserve geometrically verifiable traces of ancient drainage systems no longer present in today's landscape.
Conceived as an ongoing research programme, AncientMaps-Geography.com includes a formal falsification framework comprising more than forty decisive tests across geological, geochemical, and cartometric lines. The underlying scientific manuscript is openly available as a preprint on EarthArXiv, with datasets and statistical outputs archived on Zenodo to invite broad academic scrutiny.
